    Hair Colourists FAQs

How often you should be colouring your roots depends on your hair colour/style – for example, whether it’s semi-permanent or permanent, and, of course, the level of regrowth you’re comfortable with seeing. With this said, our stylists highly recommend booking in for a touch-up every 6-8 weeks, or within up to an inch of regrowth.

The reasoning behind this lies in hair growth science. Because your roots sit closer to the heat of your scalp, they typically develop faster than the rest of the hair when bleached or dyed. In letting your hair grow out beyond the one-inch mark, you’ll likely be risking inconsistencies in your touch-up colour.

How long your new head of hair colour lasts ultimately depends on the product applied. Permanent hair colour should remain in the hair for as long as it takes to grow out (with touch-ups of new growth at the roots every 6-8 weeks), however, external factors including your haircare routine and how frequently you use heat may cause fading within 4-6 weeks.

Semi-permanent dye is more water soluble than its permanent counterpart, and as such, tends to wash out at between 4-12 shampoos.

In both cases, using colour-safe hair washing and conditioning products, avoiding harsh chemicals (particularly chlorine) and minimising heat exposure can help ensure your hair colour’s longevity.

Ultimately, our hair stylists are here to help you achieve a colour you love! If you’re concerned about whether or not your dream colour is the best option for you, we’ll talk through your options during your consultation, creating a beautiful colour perfectly suited to your unique features and requirements.

On a general basis, we recommend taking skin tone, eye colour, and personal style into account. Warmer skin tones send to suit warmer hair colour tones in turn – making deep golden and dark hues common choices. On the other hand, cooler skin tones are most often best complemented by equally cool hair – think icy and ashy.

Babylights are a variation of the highlighting colour technique – taking their name from the hair envy-worthy sunkissed highlights often seen in children’s natural tresses. As such, they’re a more subtle, finer version of highlights themselves, aiming to add radiant, youthful dimension to hair of any style or colour.

Babylights are typically created using very small locks of hair. They’re expertly sectioned for the most natural possible look, and lightened in line with your hair colour goals, creating a subtle, soft final look.

Hair Ministry’s expert colourists are highly experienced in creating babylights. If you’re based in Suffolk and looking to embrace this on-trend style, why not book in for an appointment today?

Once you’ve made the leap and decided to go blonde, you’ll likely want to see results immediately. Whether or not this can be achieved, however, depends on the existing colour and condition of your hair – particularly if you’re looking for an icy platinum final shade.

Whilst it’s technically possible to reach this level of lightness within one day, our stylists almost never recommend it – particularly for those with dark, box-dyed, or heavily damaged hair. Undergoing such significant bleaching in a short period of time or on unsuitable hair can lead to damage, breakage, and dryness, never mind issues such as uneven lift.

As such, before starting your appointment, we’ll work through a full hair consultation, discussing the exact process required in order to achieve your dream look. Most often, we’ll suggest spreading the process over several appointments in order to achieve the best possible results and retain your hair health.

In the world of hair colour, a patch test is a crucial safety test designed to avoid allergic reactions to products – typically dye.

You’ll normally be required to complete a patch test 48 hours prior to your first appointment. This will involve placing a small amount of the product on the skin behind your ear or your inner arm. You’ll then be free to go about your business for 48 hours, on the lookout for any reactions including redness, swelling, itching, or burning.

So long as no negative reactions occur, you’ll be free to go forward to your hair colour appointment in complete confidence.

Root stretching (also known as smudging or dragging) is a low-maintenance hair colouring technique designed to create a seamless transition between your hair’s natural colour/roots and its ends.

The application process generally involves applying your desired colour to the roots and gently stretching it towards the ends of your hair, creating a beautifully natural gradient effect perfect for lived-in beachy looks or simple low-maintenance lightening.

Root stretching shouldn’t be confused with root shadowing, a similar technique in which there isn’t so much blending at the root area, creating a noticeable shadow.

The length of your hair colour appointment can depend on a number of factors including the type of colour you’re seeking, the stylist skill level required, and, of course, the condition and length of your hair.

Depending on your provider, a simple root touch-up might take an hour (or in the case of an express appointment, less), whilst a bespoke colour service could take up to three hours or more to allow for custom mixing, application, development, and styling. If you’re looking to go platinum blonde from a particularly dark colour, you might require multiple appointments over a few weeks in order to maintain your hair health.

Hair gloss (also known as hair glaze) is a semi-permanent hair treatment designed to enhance the shine of both natural and coloured hair. It makes for a wonderful conditioner, smoothing and improving the general appearance of dull hair – but can also be used to subtly change the tone or colour depth.

It’s most commonly applied as an enhancement, gently depositing additional colour on the outer area of the hair strand rather than penetrating it like permanent options.
