Massage FAQs

Massage is a world-renowned therapeutic practice that has been used in one form or another for thousands of years to condition the body and mind into a state of relaxation. Rooted in ancient healing traditions from multiple cultures across the globe, this much-loved treatment is now typically delivered by a massage therapist, who will use their hands (and in some cases, other instruments) to knead, stroke, tap, apply pressure to, and stretch target muscles.

Different types of massage cater to various needs, from relaxation-focused treatments like our back and full body massages, to those addressing specific health concerns, like deep tissue massage or sports massage. Overall, the treatment as a whole is proven to reduce muscle tightness, minimise stress and anxiety, and improve circulation.

Massage therapy is well known for its numerous benefits for the body and mind. Physically, a good massage delivered by a fully trained therapist can help relieve muscle tension, improve circulation, enhance flexibility, and reduce pain, including chronic conditions like lower back pain. It can also help with lymphatic drainage!

The benefits don’t end there. From a mental perspective, massage’s stress-reducing qualities can make for reduced levels of anxiety, elevate mood, enhance mental clarity, and improve sleep quality.

We’ve all experienced the wonderfully relaxing sensation of leaving a massage session feeling more relaxed, and sometimes, sleepy than ever. But why exactly does this sensation happen?

Our experts argue that the physical movement involved in a massage treatment, whether kneading, tapping, or stroking, stimulates the release of melatonin, a hormone responsible for regulating sleep. In addition to this, massage is said to reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) levels, minimising its interference with sleeping patterns.

Massage is one of the most well known treatment options for an aching back. The best massage type for you, however, is determined by your pain’s underlying cause, and, of course, your personal preferences. Deep tissue, Swedish, and hot stone are all common treatment options.

Here at Hair Ministry, our professional massage therapists have developed a back, neck and shoulder Massage specifically designed to target discomfort in these areas, altering their technique in line with your exact needs.

Pregnancy massage is one of the best ways to receive pregnancy-related symptoms including back pain and swelling, however, as with most physical treatments during pregnancy, it’s important to err on the side of caution – as some options, specifically those requiring you to lie down, may be unsuitable. Our experts advise seeking out a professional provider trained and experienced in prenatal massage techniques.

At Hair Ministry, we offer specialised pregnancy massage treatments, delivered by our trained professionals in a completely safe and comfortable manner using only approved techniques, positions, and products.

Booking in for a massage for the first time can be daunting, but don’t worry – our expert therapists are here to create the most relaxing possible environment. Here’s what to expect when you arrive at Hair Ministry:

Consultation: Your therapist will start your appointment with an open consultation, during which you’ll be able to discuss any specific goals and health concerns. Using this information, they’ll create the perfect treatment plan for your unique needs.

Preparation: Post-consultation, you’ll be led to one of our tranquil treatment rooms, and be given time alone to undress to a level you’re comfortable with before relaxing into our massage tables and covering yourself with a towel.

Massage: Using some of our top quality massage oil to facilitate their movements, your massage therapist will begin your treatment, using a combination of stroking, tapping, and kneading movements to relax muscles in your pre-discussed target areas.

After the Massage: Once the massage is complete, the therapist will leave the room to let you dress in private. You can take as much time as you’d like to decompress. Once you’re ready, your therapist will offer you a glass of water and discuss how to best enjoy the benefits of your treatment.

Besides taking the rest of the day to enjoy the wonderfully relaxing effects of your massage, there are a number of things you can do to ensure its benefits last for as long as possible:

Stay Hydrated: Massage can release toxins held deep within your body. Be sure to drink enough water post-treatment to flush them out.

Avoid Bathing: The oils used during your treatment are designed to soak into the skin, delivering their benefits over the course of a few hours. To maximise their effects, stay clear of bathing or showering for 6-8 hours post treatment.

Avoid Alcohol and Smoking: Alcohol and smoking can counteract the beneficial effects of massage on your circulation and stress levels. Be sure to avoid them if possible!

The cost of a massage can vary widely across the UK depending on your chosen location, type of massage, and duration of the treatment.

On average, in the UK, a massage can range from around £30 to £100 or more. For example, a simple back, neck, and shoulder massage might cost around £30-£45 for a 30-minute session. A longer, more comprehensive massage such as a full body massage could range from £50 to £80 for a 60-minute session.

At Hair Ministry, our prices are structured based on the treatment type and length. For example, a 25-minute back, shoulder, and neck massage is priced at £37, while a longer 40-minute session is £50. A 50-minute full body massage is £60. For a more indulgent experience, our warm candle massage, lasting 50 minutes, is priced at £65.

Massage provides a well-known helping hand to those suffering from sore, tight, or tense muscles.

Too many hard days at the gym or work? Your therapist will use their hands to physically break up buildups of lactic acids and other waste products in the muscle tissue, combating soreness and stiffness caused by overuse.

Tense and stressed? Massage aims to loosen the muscles, locating and smoothing out any tension or knots in the muscle fibres causing pain and discomfort. This, over time, will also improve flexibility!
In addition to the above, massage can also improve both circulation and the body’s response to pain caused by muscle tension. In our opinion, it’s one of the best treatments out there for aches and pains.

The body’s chemical response to massage treatments is widely recognised to help reduce levels of anxiety. Directly impacting the body’s response to stress, massage both reduces cortisol levels and stimulates the release of endorphins, simultaneously minimising negative feelings of anxiety, and increasing those of relaxation and calmness.

To further this, massage can stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, the part of the nervous system responsible for ‘rest and digest’ activities. This can counteract the ‘fight or flight’ stress response, reducing heart rate, lowering blood pressure, and slowing breathing rate.

Physically, nothing beats the feeling of soothing strokes and gentle pressure. Massage is a wonderful way to smooth out the physical symptoms – including muscle tension, restlessness, and headaches –of anxiety.
